CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: April Flannery submitted this report. The Christian Ed. Committee met on Oct. 9, 2011 with all members present. We met to discuss Christmas program ideas and titles and decided to go with the play: “Christmas: FAQ.” The program will take place on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 11 am and involve ages pre-school thru high school. An offering will be collected during the program to benefit our current mission project, Project: SOS. Following the program, there will be a free-will soup/sandwich/bars luncheon to benefit the youth. A full dress rehearsal is planned for Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 with the time to be announced later. Sign up sheets will be posted in the elementary grades so a count can be calculated as to who will be in the program so parts can be assigned. In an effort to get more children to attend Sunday school, Amy invited all of the Pioneer Club’s Voyager class to join us Sunday mornings at Sunday school. They were learning about worship, fellowship and encouraging others so all received an invitation! The Committee will also be collecting “Manger Gifts” during the Advent season this year. Each Sunday during Advent we will be collecting different baby items which will be given to the Children’s Inn. Each week each child/family will have the opportunity to bring a baby gift (ex. shampoo, wipes, diapers and cereal) and place it in the manger. We talk about it during opening at Sunday school and it will be put in the bulletin and newsletter so everyone knows what items to bring each Sunday. It will also be open to members of the congregation. There will be no Sunday school on the following dates: Nov. 27, 2011, Dec. 25, 2011 and Jan. 1, 2012. WORSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP: Sandy Giegling and Serena Hoffman transferred their membership from the United Church of Canistota to Sunnycrest UMC in Sioux Falls, SD on October 3, 2011. Delmar Giegling has transferred his membership from Zion Lutheran Church in Canistota to the United Church of Canistota on October 17, 2011. Tyler and Becky McGregor transferred their membership from the United Church of Salem to the United Church of Canistota on October 24, 2011. PASTORAL RELATIONS: Dick Dawson submitted this report. The PPR committee met on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011. The committee discussed the pastor assessment paper which is to be sent to the district office of the United Methodist Church by December. The committee went through the budget to be given to the finance committee. Due to the fact that the average salary in America has not risen in the last 6 years, no pay increases are requested. Pastor John’s salary will reflect a decrease in the amount of the cost of his schooling. In this way he can decrease his personal tax liability but will in effect be making the same yearly wage. Starlyn received a bump on the choir salary last year. This year the committee asks to increase the hourly wage for the extra custodial work Del does to an even $15 per hour. The committee also discussed salaried positions vacation leave. It seems to be one of those “gray area” things that need to be defined and written down for reasons of clarity and accountability. WORLD OUTREACH: Roger Ketcham, Deb Tieszen, Ivan and Katie Ortman attended a service at the Jameson Annex honoring Pastor Regan and Becky Beauchamp for 20 plus years of prison ministry on October 13, 2011. The prisoners planned the party and also honored the volunteers. UWS: Carol Woltzen submitted this report. The United Church fall turkey supper was held on Wed. Oct. 19, 2011. The UWS thanks Del Church and Peg Parry for their leadership and to all who helped in any way. A total of 597 tickets were sold (dine-in and carry outs). At this time ticket sales, coffee and bake room, and donations for left-overs total $5,601.53. Expenses have yet to be paid. DORCAS: No report. MEMBER AT LARGE: No report. ELDERS: The South Dakota Presbytery is meeting on Friday, October 28, 2011 in Brookings, SD. Gayle Janzen will attend this meeting. MINISTRIES COORDINATOR REPORT: Starlyn Church submitted this report. Starlyn made 22 visits, led the Bible study on Galatians at Good Samaritan Society—Canistota and continued to coordinate Pioneer Club. The people are enjoying the Bible Study. The average attendance at Pioneer Club is 73. 12 families/persons received gift certificates to the Turkey Supper. Of that 12, two were not redeemed. Because of this ministry 10 adults/parents and 22 kids were fed. There was a bake sale to help pay for Joni Gaffer’s Women of Faith experience. Starlyn sold 20 tickets to the Women of Faith. 11 ladies from the United Church attended Women of Faith along with ladies from Memorial Lutheran and Central Baptist in Sioux Falls. It was a wonderful conference! Our church purchased 50 tickets for next year which will be Oct. 19 and 20, 2012. The conference is shortened to only Friday night and Saturday in 2012 hoping that more women will be able to attend. This will make the bus cheaper, only one night in a motel and fewer meals. Tickets are $101. PASTOR'S REPORT: Pastor John reported Communion was served at the rail to135 people on October 2, 2011. Communion was served at the Good Samaritan Society-Canistota on October 11, 2011 to 13 people. Interment was at the Hills of Rest Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD. Pastor John requests vacation dates of October 31—November 4, 2011. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: April Flannery submitted this report. A joint kick off for Pioneer Club and Sunday school was held on Sept. 11, 2011. There was an outdoor worship service and 2 Bibles were presented to 3rd graders. Those receiving a Bible from the committee were: Tyce Ortman, and Anna Schroeder. Blake Anderson, Lexi Tieszen, Tate Tieszen and Jakob Lindstrom are also 3rd graders who received their Bibles on other dates. After worship, games were played from ages 2 thru senior high and even adults could participate in a water balloon toss. A potluck meal followed the games. It was a fun day to start off the year! The committee wishes to thank Starlyn for all her help organizing the day and all who came and participated and helped in any way. Thank you! April and Amy met on September 18th to organize crafts/projects and DVD’s with each elementary class’ lessons for the 2011-2012 year. Collections for Project SOS will continue through May 2012. Sunday school children may bring school supplies or money for this mission project. There is a tote in the narthex for the school supplies. There is a huge need for teachers to sign up to help teach Sunday school. We rely on volunteers each week in the elementary classes. There are still many Sundays open if you want to teach or be a helper (pre-school/kindergarten class). Please help out! Thank you! The Christmas program date is set for Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 11 am. The committee will be meeting soon to discuss the rest of the year and Christmas program details.
WORSHIP AND MEMBERSHIP: Susan Beck reported that having the ushers take care of the coffee if no one is signed up to do so, is working out OK. There were two pulpit supplies, Randy Tschetter and a Gideon speaker. The committee is updating the usher list.
PASTORAL RELATIONS: Dick Dawson submitted this report. The PPR committee met on Sept. 8, 2011. All were in attendance with the exception of Pastor John, who was aware of the meeting but had a previous commitment to preach at the prison. The committee discussed the material sent by the Dakota Conference Cabinet to help assess the viability of our congregation and effectiveness of our pastor in leading our church. Also included is clergy compensation info, which all is due to the Conference by Dec. 1, 2011 Also discussed were staff vacation policies and the responsibility of answering the phone when Starlyn and PJ are gone at the same time. All of the above will be discussed again in further detail with PJ at the next meeting, which will be held in early Oct.

There was a Pioneer Club meeting on September 7, 2011 to discuss class sizes, calendar, prayer time and bonus coupons. Pioneer Club is starting at 6:25 pm this year and going until 7:30 pm. The teachers and helpers meet for prayer from 6:05-6:15 pm. There are two Skippers and Scooters classes. Every classroom in the church is used. Music is in the sanctuary which doesn't work very well. Two more small tables for the Skippers were purchased. Orange cones may be purchased to block off part of the parking lot so that cars can't drive all the way through it which, hopefully, will make it safer. Outdoor worship service was on Sept. 11, 2011 for the kickoff of Sunday School and Pioneer Club. The kids age 2-seniors in high school ran races for bonus coupons. The money raised will be used to pay for the meals of families in Canistota who can't afford to come on their own to our Turkey Supper. $289 cash was donated and the kids raised $98 with bonus coupons. With the coupon money the fixings for a Christmas dinner for families who can't afford it will be purchased. 75 kids attended Pioneer Club these past two weeks. All of the tickets are sold for Women of Faith. There will be a bake sale on October 9, 2011 during coffee fellowship to raise funds so Joni Gaffer can attend Women of Faith and maybe help one other with expenses. The group will leave at noon on October 20, 2011 and return home on Saturday, October 22, 2011. Of the 55 tickets purchased, only 10 ladies are from our church. Next year the United Church women may not attend as a group unless women of our church show a lot of interest for 2012. Starlyn requests permission to show the movie "Christmas with a Capital C" sometime in December. Our church would partner with a Christian movie night ministry called Pure Flix Cinema. For this movie we would pay a license fee of $149.95. You can watch the trailer of the movie by going to: www.pureflixcinema.com/jc. This would be open to anyone in the community free of charge. This might be a way to get some of the unchurched families into our church with no strings attached. A couple of senior citizens have said that they would enjoy the opportunity to watch a movie because they don't drive to Sioux Falls anymore to go to one. For this first one, the Pioneer Club staff would take care of the details. There are other Christian movies that come to mind that we could show if this goes over well. Cody has a little popcorn machine that could be used – no beverages. Starlyn requests permission to purchase 15 little chairs for Pioneer Club. The funds will come out of grounds and equipment.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Cody Church submitted this report: Christian Ed met in July to discuss Sunday school material and the upcoming school year as a whole. We also cleaned our church portion that evening. We are again having Sunday school after church starting with singing leading the opening. We have selected Group’s “Buzz” as the material we will use. This material focuses on characters and stories of the Bible, which we feel is very important. Other ministries at United Church, particularly Pioneer Club, focus on Christian living/characteristics, morals and values. In regards to Pioneer Club, we will join together for an opening Sunday Kick-off on September 11th including outdoor worship, games and a potluck to follow. We will also give Bibles to 3rd graders on that day. Junior High will continue to learn about the ancestors of Jesus and Senior High will continue using “fuel” by Lifeway. Sunday school offering will be a collection of supplies or monies assisting with school bags. Thank you to April and Amy who cleaned, updated and restocked the “quiet bags” and also to Amy for replacing some dowels on the Palm Sunday banners. We have a couple of prayer requests over the next few weeks. One, pray about where God is leading you to help with Christian education, namely teaching or helping with Sunday school. Sign-up sheets will be posted in each classroom. Finally, we have been short two people on our committee for a while. We ask you prayerfully consider talking to April or Cody if you are interested in being a Christian education committee member.

MINISTRIES COORDINATOR REPORT: In June, Starlyn made 25 visits and 1 hospital visit. Quilts were prayed over for Kathy Hofer and Lindsey Mehlbrech. A quilt square was designed and made to be put in a quilt that will honor Rev. Rod and Doris Gist when the Gist Lodge at Storm Mountain United Methodist Camp is dedicated. We thank Mary Tieszen and Amy Tieszen for helping with that project. Starlyn led the Bible study on Isaiah at the Good Samaritan Society-Canistota and Starlyn served communion at the Good Samaritan Society-Canistota to 15 people on July 12, 2011. The Pioneer Club staff met to discuss the upcoming year. The changes are: Starting time is 6:25 pm and ending time is 7:30 pm; prayer time is 6:05 –6:15 pm for all staff. Pioneer Store is discontinued and each class will earn bonus coupons as a class to earn something special as decided by their teachers; dividing the Scooter class and possibly dividing the Skipper class. Having more classes will require more rooms, more chairs and more tables. The Sunday School kickoff and the Pioneer Club kickoff is together on Sunday, September 11, 2011 with outdoor worship, games and a potluck dinner. A few of the staff filled out the form for the Vision Committee. In July Starlyn made 20 visits and 2 hospital visits. The Bible Study at Good Samaritan Society-Canistota finished the study of Isaiah. Materials were ordered for a study by Dr. Jeremiah. The committee is providing cake and drinks so members that are staying are asked to bring something to share other than dessert. Diane Mammenga is hired to make the cakes. It is an ongoing battle to get coffee servers every Sunday and the same people are stepping up when no one signs up. In the future, worship and membership will make coffee and have cups on those Sundays. It will be self service. The committee will still continue to recruit coffee servers as they have in the past. In response to the comments made in past council meetings, Sandy made an announcement on Oct. 10, 2010 asking anyone who wants to change their ushering month or be added or deleted to contact someone on the committee and it will be changed for next year. The committee asks anyone on council who is approached about ushering to pass the information along to the committee. Monte would like to use praise band money to purchase the drums and guitar, since they have not used the money in their budget for a lot of years. The last item the committee discussed was the Christmas tree. Worship and Membership would like to purchase a new tree for next year. The committee thought they could check out the after Christmas sales and get one then. The purchase requests will be brought before the next council meeting.
